We made it! Summer is finally here and with it - outdoor events galore! There are fireworks going off all over the county, from Navarre, Milton, to Pensacola Beach. Make sure to check out our suggested event list below.
We are BIG Blue Angels fans and they will be here for one week of activities. Coming up from July 4th through the 8th, you will have the opportunity to see them during practice flights and rehearsals. Locations and times are in the calendar below.
This group of 17 officers, typically serve two years with the team. Blue Angels officers return to the fleet after their tours of duty.
The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach. Don't miss the big Pensacola Beach Air Show featuring the Blue Angels Show on July 8th. As always, it will be an experience you will long remember.

Gardening in Santa Rosa County – JULY

Flowers
- Annuals to plant include celosia, coleus, crossandra, impatiens, kalanchoe, nicotiana, ornamental pepper, portulaca, salvia, and vinca.
- Lightly re-fertilize flowering annual and perennial beds in order to retain their vigor and keep them colorful.
- Remove old flowers (deadhead).
- Keep leggy growth pinched back.
Trees and Shrubs
- Remove spent flower heads from crape myrtles so that they will continue to bloom.
- Watch for, and control pests if necessary. Spider mites on shrubs and flowers. Lacebugs on azaleas and pyracantha. Flower thrips on roses, gardenias and other blooming plants. Oleander caterpillars on oleanders
- Do any necessary pruning of hydrangeas as soon as flowering is finished. They must have sufficient time to re-grow before the dormant season.
- Do not heavily prune any of the spring flowering shrubs such as azaleas, camellias or spiraea.

Beat the Heat - Pet Friendly Advice

Florida - the Sunshine State. People come to enjoy the sun and beaches, and many bring their pets with them. Whether you live here permanently or you are just visiting, follow these steps to keep your pets comfortable during the heat of summer:
- Keep animals out of direct sunlight during the heat of the day, roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Prevent sunburn. Animals can get sunburned too, especially short haired dogs, or dogs and cats with pink skin and white hair.
- Always make sure animals have access to fresh water and shade. TIP: If you're thirsty, take a moment to check your animals animals water source. Refill it or freshen it if needed.
- Avoid strenuous exercise with your dog on extremely hot days, and do not exercise during the intense, midday heat.
- Test the heat radiating from the sidewalk or street on your own two feet. If it is too hot for you to stand on with your bare feet, it will be too hot for the sensitive pads of your pet’s feet as well. The same applies to the back of a pickup truck. Place your hand against the bed of the pickup truck. If the metal surface is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your animals.
- Cats exhibit many of the same symptoms as dogs when stressed by the heat. Early signs of heat stroke can be panting that lasts more than a few minutes, anxiety and pacing, increased heartbeat, respiratory distress or hyperventilation, lethargy, and an increased body temperature.
Every year, pets suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car—even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes.
